Clean the Clutter
January 01, 2008
The New Year is always a fabulous time – or should I say fabulously busy time? It’s also famous for the age-old “New Year’s Resolutions”, or “New Year’s Intentions”, as I would prefer to say.
What will your 2008 be like? Will you WAIT to see what happens, or will you MAKE it happen?
Most of my coaching clients have already developed their focus, intention, and goals for the coming year. Many have taken advantage of a private retreat with me as their coach. Some have set aside their own day for reflection and planning. Regardless, all are ahead of the vast majority of dentists and are set for an exciting year of growth and possibilities.
One tool that is infinitely helpful in preparing yourself for the New Year is cleaning out your closets. That’s right, your closets, those hidden spaces where we hide all things that we think we might use some day, or might someday want to reminisce about. Seriously, how often does that happen?
Metaphorically, our closets are also those not-so-easily-seen areas of our life and our practice that we may not want to look at or we may not want others to see. They're those areas lurking in the shadows that we hide at all costs.
The hidden cost for hanging onto all those things in our life that we might use one day, we might reminisce about, or we don't dare to expose, is much bigger than you think. It’s the clutter that occupies our thinking, even if it’s not in our daily thoughts. It’s the junk that keeps us from moving ahead and making things happen, whether it’s learning something new, having new experiences, branching out into new territories, or leaving the past behind. That “clutter” holds us to the past, shackling us to the comfortable, the predictable, and the common.
What aspects of your practice are you allowing to clutter your life? What changes have you been afraid to make and now are being held back? How are you settling for just mediocrity? What have you not stepped into because you’re scared or just need to talk over with someone?
The clutter will hold you back. Under-performing staff members, a lack of accountability, a cloudy vision, no room for change … these and many, many more will just keep you and your practice at a lackluster performance level. Yes, you’ll still get through the year, although for most it will just be another year of life to check off.
Why wait any longer? Try cleaning the clutter and see what happens. You’ll be opening doors you never knew were there …
