Hurricane Season
May 13, 2007
For those living along the coastlines of the U.S., hurricane season is just around the corner. What a perfect opportunity for me to share with you some thoughts and questions about the "hurricanes" in our lives.
If you live in the U.S. (yes, some folks reading this are in different countries!), you remember New York City on September 11, 2001 - the infamous "9/11". That was a "hurricane" of a different sort, but one that affected millions of people. It was so catastrophic that it rocked many people to the core of their own personal foundation.
Tornadoes in other parts of the U.S. recently devastated entire towns, leaving them with few tangible assets. Their foundation wasn't just rocked; it was literally taken away.
Non-weather related events in each of our lives challenge us from day-to-day to remain solid in our own foundation, be it the untimely physical death of a loved one or the death of a relationship, changes in work status, jobs, or income, loss of money, accidents, illness, and more.
Is it the loss of the tangible parts of our lives that challenge us so much? Is it the loss of intangibles, such as relationships? What is it that rocks the core of who we are?
Despite the variety of things that challenge each of us differently, how do we manage these day-to-day challenges? How do we keep our sense of balance in our daily life? How do we strengthen our personal foundation to weather the onslaught of an ever-increasing barrage of challenges to our enjoyment of life?
As I sit here in an airport lobby waiting for my flight, there's the blaring of the TV about the war in Iraq, followed by so-called experts arguing over what the country should do next, followed by how to avoid someone taking a picture of your credit card with their cell phone, followed by an advertisement for a new drug to help you smooth out your life, followed by another advertisement by some attorney who wants you to hire him to sue somebody, followed by yet more commentary on gay rights, abortion . it never quits.
It's no wonder most of our population doesn't sleep well, are over-weight, over-use drugs and alcohol, stay angry and agitated, and generally look for any way to disengage with life and/or people. All of us struggle with at least some of this to an extent, unless you're kidding yourself. And that struggle includes re-discovering and re-connecting the to essence of who we are . that essence that may have been set aside many years ago to somehow deal with the challenges that living in this day and age brings.
How can we break through the barriers that will allow us to experience life in a different way? How can we re-open the doors to connection with our hearts, with other people, including our friends and co-workers?
The answers are neither easy nor simple, of course. If they were, we would all have traversed the unfriendly terrain and would likely be having a very different experience of life.
Certainly, there's a multitude of opportunities available to us to make our personal foundation more solid, to have a different experience of life, to live a life that is uncommon. Experience itself is a very good teacher, but it often gives us the test before we're ready; yet, it's how most of us have learned what we have learned. Therapists can help us understand ourselves better and get in touch with our emotions. Teachers can share information and show us a different path. Medications are available to help us heal. Friends are around to listen, to lend a helping hand.
As a coach, I help people develop awareness around thoughts and actions to enable them to make different choices. I believe that people know what's best for them when they have information available to them. I believe that developing a strong personal foundation will allow each of us to weather all of the hurricanes in our lives. I believe that your connection to your heart is the most powerful connection there is, that with that connection you can and will have a different experience of life.
These basic elements are yours to own if you're willing to make the journey. It takes courage to live a life uncommon - tremendous courage. And I want you to know there are many more people out there who are ready for that change, too, and many who have done it. You can, too, and I would be honored to assist you on your journey.
