Self-Correction/Self-Awareness
February 11, 2007

You were in a hurry; it seemed like all day long you had been behind schedule, and now you had two stops before you were going to get home anyway, and you knew that there was still more to do before you finished for the day. One of your stops was the grocery store; your spouse had asked if you would pick up a few things forgotten at an earlier errand.

You found everything you needed, and when you got to the cashiers, all of the lines were long. You felt agitated and frustrated. Out of the corner of your eye, you noticed an extra cashier coming to open a register. To your amazement, no one else seemed to notice this turn of events. So you dash over to the new cashier. You're first! Now you're going to get out of there quickly and you feel relieved. The cashier completes the sale, you pay, and out the door you go. You did it! Yippee!

Yippee?

You hadn't stood in line very long at all. There were many others who had been there long before you. As you got into the car, you started feeling a little guilty, and you secretly began hoping no one noticed - especially anyone that knew you. But down deep, you knew that you had been noticed, so you start feeling a little "less than" . you shrug it off after a few moments because you really don't want to think about it; you don't want to think one moment longer because you might discover that you're just not - well, you're just not the great human being you thought you were. You drive off to your next stop, eager to get home. Finally you do, and the grocery store experience just fads into distant memory.

It's the little acts we do from day to day that make us who we are.

Have you ever been one of the people in a long line that noticed someone who dashed to the newly opened register, someone who clearly was last in one of many long lines? What did you think about that person? Did you feel they were thoughtful, understanding, and considerate?

What we don't like in others is what we don't like about ourselves, but we're often so unaware of our own actions that all we see are the unaware actions of others.

So hopefully by now you get it: the first step toward "self-correction" is "self-awareness". Without self-awareness, there's little chance for change.

What type of person do you want to be? Do you want to feel "less-than", or are you willing to take a road less traveled?

See you on the road .
