You have choice!
October 18, 2006

"Freedom, oh freedom, well that's just some people talkin'. Your prison is walking through this world all alone." - from Desperado, by The Eagles

That song by The Eagles has always been one of my favorites, tugging at memories of what it was like feeling I was out there on my own - me against the world. Those were tough days! And, it brings up worthy conversation about the role freedom takes - or doesn't take - in our lives.

Most of us take freedom for granted, for a variety of reasons. For me, freedom is one of my highest values; in fact, I can't think of one that's more important to me. Freedom encompasses two other values - creativity and choice - which I also cherish. Without these, I would not enjoy life. Period. And that, my friends, is a strong statement.

The opposite of freedom - constraint, limitation, control - is something that dampens, even deadens, my spirit. For me, I would label that as repression, burden, or even oppression; however, my favorite label for this is "bondage" because it encompasses the deadening feelings that having no freedom brings about.

So let's make this real for you RIGHT NOW. In what ways in your personal life are you living in absolute freedom? What about your practice or business? Are you experiencing unlimited creativity and choice that empowers you and gives you a sense of being totally alive?

Conversely, in what ways do you feel trapped, stuck, or disempowered? How long have you felt that way?

Not all situations result in us feeling totally one way or another. For example, in our practice or business, we may feel we have SOME freedom and that we also have SOME bondage. Why SOME? Why not ALL?

Freedom allows us one very important and critical element: choice. You DO have choice - even in those situations when you cannot see it, imagine it, or dare the think it. You may be blind to it, it may be hidden, you may need help seeing it, or for whatever reason, you may not WANT to see it.

To stay stuck - also known as 'not making a choice' - is called "being in dilemma". Does that ring a bell for you now? Living in dilemma is like living in bondage. Living in freedom is being alive.

What's YOUR choice? What do YOU want for your life? What help do you feel you'll need?

"Come down from your fences, open the gate. It may be rainin', but there's a rainbow above you ."
