Goal Weariness
April 10, 2005
One of the many reasons people choose to work with a coach is that they or their team/staff aren't reaching their goals. What about you? Have you been reaching all your goals, or are you stalling out along the way, giving up on them, don't have goals, or just plain frustrated and weary to the bone trying to reach them?
What about goals you've set with your team or staff for your business or practice? How well are you reaching those goals? Is everyone "on board" or do you have a few players not playing?
Of course, there's lots of reasons we don't reach our goals. Instead, let's look at a simple two-step process for reaching your goals, and forget about the "why's".
1. Immediately drop all goals you've been trying too hard for.
For the next 3 months, stop trying to reach goals you've been struggling with. Set them aside. You've don't have to "let them go" or forget about them; I just want you to cease all efforts at reaching the goals you've been struggling with. Really! Include goals that your practice or business have set that aren't being reached.
2. Do a little homework with yourself first, and then your team/staff.
Set aside an hour to ask yourself . What do I value most? This can apply to anything in your life. First, make a list of what's important to you in general. Then, get specific about what's important to you in your marriage, your relationships, your family, your business/practice, your leisure time, etc.
Once you've done that homework, set or redefine your goals based on these values.
Next, do this also with your team/staff about your business..
Why does this work better? When you set goals based on YOUR TRUTH (what you value, believe, and experience as real in your life), you'll make the REAL CHOICE for what goals are truly important and meaningful to you. In other words, you won't be externally motivated.
Next, prioritize those goals is based in this order:
- Those goals that restore/enhance your personal integrity - Those goals that fill your needs (we all have them!) - Those goals that satisfy what you want (wants are different than needs ...)
When you set and reach goals based first on your integrity, then on your needs, and lastly on your wants, you'll experience true fulfillment rather than short term gratification. Your goals will be reached more quickly and easily because you are basing them on personal responsibility, truth, and being grounded in a strong foundation of who you truly are (or your business is).
Based on personal experience, working with a coach will help you and/or your business reach all your goals at least twice as fast as doing it alone. And, you'll have more fun, learn more about yourself, and experience success in faster, easier ways.
Here's to FULFILLMENT!
