Coaching 101 - Simple Steps with Powerful Results
November 03, 2004
Whenever I give a workshop that includes the introduction and practicing of a simple model of coaching, I never seem to allow enough time for people to really explore that topic to the depth that they want!
By working with a simple coaching model in these workshops, people from all walks of life and situations feel more empowered, because they have new tools - tools that they can put to use immediately in their work and home, with both personal and professional relationships.
Even if you've never attended one of my workshops, here are a few simple guidelines for you to be a more effective coach for others:
Set any personal agenda aside. If you have an agenda for the conversation, you're not really coaching.
Act with intention and integrity. If you're going to win their trust, you've got to create a collaborative relationship with them.
Promote discovery. Coaching is not being an answer computer to others' problems. Help them discover their own solutions.
Listen like you have never listened before. Listen with your heart, soul, and your whole body. Really strive to turn off the chatter in your head and be totally receptive and attentive to the person.
Encourage them to not wait for others to tell them what to do. Champion their integrity, intuition, knowledge, dreams, talents, and skills. Be their cheerleader.
Use the power of language to help them shift their attitudes, skills, and behaviors. Using distinctions and paraphrases will often help others see things in different ways . and it might just be the thing that opens up a new direction for them.
Be in charge of your own attitude. Having a positive attitude is paramount to being a good coach for someone. Having a negative attitude is detrimental to the coaching process.
Make big requests of others. Many times a person wants to be challenged, or is just stuck; your making huge requests can inspire, drive, and motivate them to achieve far beyond what they thought they were ever able to achieve.
Walk your talk. To be a great coach, you also have to live your life greatly. Be an example, a role model; those actions speak far louder than any brilliant coaching words.
