Problem-Solving in Pressure Situations
July 22, 2004

Pressure situations make creative problem-solving much more difficult.

If you're a dentist or any other solo professional/business owner, you may already have beads of sweat popping out on your forehead just thinking about the seemingly unending pressure situations you face each day as you read this. (If you're not a dentist, I hope you now realize you're not alone!)

Personally, I often don't feel I have the time to give the situation the attention I feel it deserves. There's not enough time . there are too many items on my agenda . the demands seem to mount . I feel tons more stress. Many times I feel alone, like it's all up to me to solve the problem. I tend to withdraw and not ask or include others in helping me solve the problem.

Sound vaguely familiar?

To counteract pressure situations that may make you feel like you need to make a decision NOW, take a deep breath and do the following:

1. Ask questions to whoever might have additional information that would be helpful.
2. Discuss the issues with someone who is safe to do so.
3. Develop action steps based on your new information.

What about other situations that diminish your creativity? Or, what times do you feel less creative than others?

From my experience, our creativity diminishes when we're not relaxed, not "in our element", tired, stressed, not focused, unhappy, depressed, or any number of other human conditions that our endlessly busy, unrelenting and unforgiving world seem to present to us. What's true for you?

Taking care of yourself physically, emotionally, and spiritually - no matter what the situation - will allow your creativity to return. You'll move back into the action mode, and best of all, you'll quit looking like you're a deer-in-the-headlights!
