You Won't Get Over IT
June 14, 2004
How many times have you heard or thought "They'll get over it"? Does anyone - do we - really get over anything? Or, do we just 'file it away' for another day?
I've had - and will continue to have my own challenges/struggles/problems - which I'll now affectionately name IT - in whatever area needs my attention. Funny thing is, the longer I don't address IT, the bigger IT becomes, the more powerful IT gets, and the more IT begs for my attention. Unless, of course, I run away from IT. Then I can just pretend IT doesn't exist. Easy enough, right?
IT shows up in our lives for a reason, maybe several reasons. Can you see the reason when IT shows up in your life? For most, it's very difficult. Have you ever noticed how easy it is for us to see the solution for another's problem, and especially when it's right in front of them? Have you ever noticed how hard it can be for us to see solutions for our own problems, yet someone else can suddenly and easily help us find our way, leaving us sometimes embarrassed by our ineptness? Truly, we are blinded by our own inability to see ourselves wholly, honestly, and without prejudice. It is one of the top all-time struggles.
When I was much younger, I had a lot of employee turnover in my practice. I thought, "Well, they just weren't the right person" or "They just couldn't do the job" or any number of other reasons - I mean, excuses - that they weren't in my employ any longer. I'm even embarrassed to say how many employees came through my practice one year, and I can tell you I certainly didn't "get IT", nor did I "get over IT" without some serious introspection.
That's right, introspection . looking inward for my answers, for my truth. (And I was so sure IT was the employees' problems!)
How do you "get over IT"? Sooner or later, we trace back to a point in our lives that we sold out to something that wasn't true in our lives; we began NOT living our truth. That's where our trouble began. To get back to that point, begin by trusting your instincts, your intuition. Listen to your heart. Pay attention to the messages being delivered to you.
For most of us, going back to step one and starting to live our life with our own truth is a tall order - maybe too tall of one. As your coach, I suggest taking baby steps, as long as the baby steps move you directly towards seeing yourself in the clearest light possible. Making these small steps - small shifts - work best and are the most enduring, but don't kid yourself: if you're not being truthful with yourself, IT becomes bigger.
Worse, it won't go away, and you won't get over IT.
Where are you not living your truth?
