What's stopping you?
May 24, 2004
Well, I don't know what stops you personally, but I do notice what has stopped me and lots of others.
For example, we try to be reasonable. We think it through. We stick our toe in the water. Hmmm. What do others think? How are they reacting? What have been their results? Yes, these are all very reasonable steps to take. And, I'm certainly not advocating that you do dangerous things, take wild risks, and be irresponsible.
It's just that by being responsible you run the risk of being distracted by other items that have more passion or short-term importance. You get off track.
When you are intentional, you deal with what's most important to you in your life.
For example, imagine knocking on a house door and getting no response, though you feel sure someone is home. You wait a reasonable amount of time and knock again. There's no answer, so you leave. No one's home, right? Surely they would have answered the door!
Now, imagine there is a raging fire being driven by the wind moving quickly across their yard towards their house. You can see that the house is going to catch fire, and you're fearful that someone's life could be in grave danger. Quickly, you bang on the door while shouting, "Fire! Fire! Hurry! Get out!" You are unrelenting in your action of getting the attention of ANYONE in the house. You fear for their lives! You must get their attention!
Your level of intentionality brings them quickly to the door. Their lives are spared.
But what if there is no emergency in your life? What if there are no external forces shoving you into action? Then where does your intention come from?
As a coach, I talk to many people that like the idea of coaching. They like the idea of talking to someone to help them with whatever might be going on, from problems at the office, to relationship issues, to making plans, brainstorming, getting organized ... to those who want to experience more of the intangibles of life, such as fulfillment, peace, simplicity, and freedom. They also think that working with a coach sounds cool, new, refreshing, even high tech. They can see that working with their own coach they could achieve these things.
But that's where they stop.
What do you want in your life? Where will your intention to have what you want come from?
Most importantly, what steps are you willing to take?
