Connecting, Connection, and Connectedness
March 14, 2004

Almost everyone I know-including me- longs for that feeling of connectedness to other people. It's our nature. We long to have those circle of friends, those confidantes, those significant others with whom we can share our random thoughts, inner secrets, matters of the heart, daily occurrences and surprises. Certainly, we have ample opportunities for connection with many people throughout a typical day, whether it is through our work/business, social, or family life.

So why is it we connect with some and not with others?

There are magical moments when I deeply connect with someone. The feeling is indistinguishable. It's glorious. How did it happen for me? What was different about that time versus other times?

For me, connection happens when I am listening with my heart, when I am open to possibilities, when I am ready to receive love and give it, when I feel the mingling of my spirit with theirs. It's timeless, ageless, meaningful, captivating, memorable. More than just a nice feeling.

When I'm not connecting, I'm usually focused on my personal agenda: I'm "too" busy, eager to say what I think, what I want. I may be feeling emotional or physical pain, I may be filled with concerns, fears. Whatever, the reason, my focus is elsewhere: it's not on the present, and it's not with the person I'm with at that moment. My focus is usually about me.

In what ways are you available for connecting with other people? In what ways are you not? How can you be more present - and thus more connected - with your family, spouse, friends, clients, patients, staff members, and colleagues?
