Start Here, Start Now: The Path to Freedom
February 25, 2004

Want more freedom in your life? Looking for more enjoyment and fulfillment from day to day? Here's something guaranteed to give you some quick results.

What are you putting up with?

We call those things TOLERATIONS. Yes, I was taught not to complain, that life is hard, about not rocking the boat, to try to go along with others, and to be grateful for what I have. Above all, no whining! Although this isn't necessarily bad advice, we can still stop tolerating what is weighing us down. The problem is that when we put up with stuff, it wastes our time and energy, robs us of our freedom, and keeps us from being all we can be and enjoying our life to the fullest.

Start Here

Start by making a list of 10 things at your workplace that you've been putting off, overstepping, or ignoring. Don't try to do anything about them just yet. Begin to see how much energy and effort is being taken up by all the things you've been putting up with. Just bringing your awareness into focus will allow you to naturally begin to find solutions. Some examples of things we put up with around our workplaces could include inadequate training, equipment that isn't working properly anymore, being stressed out, or a poorly organized schedule.

Now make another list, this time for your home. At one time mine included, replacing a leaky faucet, cleaning out the garage, sharpening the mower blade, getting the car serviced, and painting the house.

For your third list, make a list about family/relationship/friends that you've just been putting up with for too long. Again, don't try to fix anything right now; just notice what you're putting on your list. For example, don't get along with spouse, the kids are too... , a friend bores, uses me, etc., but I stick around anyway, one-way friendships, the spark is missing with spouse/friends, or the neighbors bug me.

Take Heart

You can fix each and every toleration; it is a skill to develop! As you fix each one, you will feel dramatically different (you'll be amazed). Remind yourself that allowing a toleration to remain on your list is a deferment tactic that will get you nowhere.

You see, when we tolerate something, it causes friction - and therefore, creates energy - in our life. For some, tolerations provide the energy needed to function from day to day. However, to improve our quality of life, we really have no choice other than to tolerate less. Tolerating more is just a burden you can't afford.

After you handle the tolerations, you'll begin to notice a shift from not having to tolerate (a negative energy source) to living abundantly (a positive energy source). Before long, you'll immediately handle any toleration that comes your way, because you'll know and value not having any tolerations.

Congratulations, you're on your way!

Once you begin to tolerate less and less, you'll stop wasting your life, and you'll stop trying to manage situations that shouldn't be there in the first place. You'll have more energy to devote to the quality of your life. You'll grow more quickly because you are not distracted and overwhelmed with tolerations. You'll upgrade your community and spend time only with easy, fulfilling people. And, you'll be a model for your friends and family as to what's possible for them in this area.

Here's to your freedom and abundant lifestyle!
