Freedom From? Or, Freedom To?
January 01, 2004

Freedom From? Or Freedom To?
Freedom v. Bondage

When I listen to people describe freedom in their life, it mostly is about freedom from worry, stress, money matters, poor health, a bad job, a failed relationship. Yes, when you can get "free-from" these things, the change is felt immediately and can be quite powerful. I've certainly had plenty of experience of letting go of those things that weren't working in my life. When I was "free-from" those things, I did feel great, and it was immediate. But was it also lasting? Not really.

"Freedom to" is about CHOICE. It's about personal expression, development, creativity, and living your life with passion. It's about having clarity about what makes you happy, getting your needs met fully, and the many other aspects of a what we coaches call a solid personal foundation. Having that solidness in your life allows you to focus on CHOICE.

When we focus on those things in our life that move us towards freedom, our life is expanding, full, rewarding, stimulating. We're ALIVE!

When we focus on those things that make us feel "less-than", on those things that we think we must do or have responsibility for, or anything that is not expanding, supportive, or enriching to our lives, we move towards bondage - the opposite of freedom. (Just in case you're wondering, do you think I mean to say that we should shirk our responsibilties, to not keep our word? Absolutely not! Integrity is of utmost importance.)

The new year is a good time to evaluate what's in your life. Are these things moving you toward freedom . or toward bondage? When you can feel the difference, you'll naturally start making choices toward freedom . and you'll stop making those choices which limit your life, make your life smaller, or decrease your enjoyment of life - those things which move you toward bondage.

In your practice, what are those things you really enjoy? Make a list. Now, what are those things that you don't enjoy? Make that list, too. What do you notice?

In some instances, you'll be able to stop immediately doing what you don't enjoy. For others, it may take a concentrated plan to start filling your day with those things you really do enjoy. Funny thing is, when we do the things we really enjoy, we tend to more fully express ourselves and our creativity. (And we're fun to be around!) When we're not doing those things we enjoy, well . you know the picture.

Got your practice where you want it? Is your practice a delight to be in every day? Do you go home energized, excited, fulfilled? Are you excited to come back the next day? Do you even think that's possible?

Freedom versus bondage: a powerful distinction in our lives.

Coaching point: What are 10 things you can start doing right now that will move you toward freedom . and away from bondage?

P.S. Working with a coach can get you there quicker and faster!
